It’s that time of year again here in the states, when compulsive shopping and overeating are not only socially accepted, but socially expected. Its all about the food, and though holiday weight gains are commonly over estimated(usually only around a pound on average) the really interesting part is why we keep eating! According to this article from Scientific American it’s our brain’s fault. The release of dopamine, one of the ‘feel good’ chemicals, when eating tasty foods can actually create an addiction similar to that of some drugs. And the more you eat, the more you want to eat! So this Turkey-day, if you’re reaching for your fifth slice of pie, or looking to cram another scoop of ice cream into the 4th stomach you wish you had, blame it on your brain. But remember to be thankful you have one, and that you have access to all that tasty food in the first place
